My Experience with thredUp

Are you that type of person that gets easily tired of your closet and needs a constant change? I am! Every couple of years I feel like I need to refresh my closet. I often Marie Kondo my closet and end up with bags of clothes that I no longer want. Usually these clothes are in great condition and still brand new. Dare I say, never worn? Ugh, I know. I fall into the trap of buying something I like at the store, coming home , and never wearing what I bought.

Recently, I found out about thredUp. ThredUp is an online consignment store where you can sell your lightly used clothes and buy great lightly used clothes for much cheaper. I just did a spring closet clean out and decided to get rid of a ton of clothes. Like a ton!

About thredUp

Clothing is part of someone’s basic needs. But it also has become a way of expressing ourselves. Fashion has become very important in our culture. This leads to increase purchase and demand for new fashionable clothing. The thing is, fashion is also a very polluting industry. Here are some facts thredUp has present in their site:

  • We throw around 26 BILLION pounds of clothing into the global landfill every year.
  • One T-shirt takes 700 gallons of water to be made
  • Clothing will drain a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050

Guys, that is crazy!!! I certainly think about the waste we create but I don’t think about my clothing contributing to this waste!

ThredUp’s mission is to inspire people to purchase secondhand clothing first. To understand that secondhand clothing doesn’t mean worst quality, and to encourage people to sell their lightly used, good quality clothes to thredUp.

So here is how it works!

The Clean Out Process:

You can order a free clean out kit. They will send you a prelabeled bag where you can put your clothes into and ship the bag back to Thredup. You can either donate the clothes and have the cash go to a charity, or you can sell your clothes and earn cash or credit for the accepted items.

What is accepted:

  • Women’s and kids clothing (men’s is ONLY accepted if you are donating the money to charity), bags and shoes.
  • Clean and freshly washed items
  • Items in excellent condition (free of tears, rips and stains)
  • On trend and less than 5 years old

Once they receive your clothes they will go through what you sent and select the ones they can sell. What they don’t select they can send it back to you (if you sign up to get your clothes back) or they will send out to a textile company so the clothes are used to make other clothes. I like this because I know everything is being recycled.

The Pay Out Process:

Okay so this part I wasn’t so thrilled about. I made $14.85 on one bag and $16.10 on the other, which is not a lot for all the stuff I sent. I was really hoping for at least $40-50 each. But here is the catch, I can only get that payment if my items sell. And you get the cash after 14 days the item was sold, not right away. You can chose to collect the money right away, however, you will collect a lot less. My upfront earnings were $5.41 and $7.17.

I chose to wait to get my payment so I could get more. A few of my items sold pretty quick, but some still haven’t. So when I went to cash out I could chose if I wanted it transferred to my bank account (which they charge a fee), get it via pay pall or get a discover gift card. I chose to transfer to my bank account.

Conclusion:

It was cool to try it out, and I like that they are all about sustainability and recycling your clothes. But they are EXTREMELY picky and I don’t feel like you get paid a fair amount back. But they are honest about all of that on their site. I don’t think I will do it again. I will probably try to sell my clothes on Facebook marketplace or donate them.

Have you tried thredUp? What was your experience? Let me know in the comments below! Also let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can sell my clothes!
